Speck 15″ Retina Macbook Pro Satin Case Review

The Speck Case for the Retina Macbook Pro provides excellent protection for an affordable price.

Previously I had reviewed the Kuzy Case for the 15″ Retina Macbook Pro and came to the conclusion that the product was defective and downright a waste of money. Due to this, I desperately searched for an alternative to protect my precious $2,400 Retina Macbook Pro from the everyday wear and tear. I ended up coming across a case made specially for the Retina models from the people over at Speck Products. I had previously owned a Speck satin case for my previously owned 15″ Unibody Macbook Pro and it lasted 3 years providing excellent protection & satisfaction. Given the great track record I had with company in the past and the reasonable purchase price I decided to place an order.

Unboxing the case, it was evident that the build quality was far superior than the Kuzy case. It has a black satin finish which looks great and has a nice grippy feel to it. The case is thin and sleek, but still has a dense feel to it that shows reflects its high quality build material. I've been using this case for over 6 months now and it has kept my Retina Macbook Pro's body free from any scratches, dings, or dents.

There are only two small downsides of the case that I have personally experienced. Over time the two back tabs on the bottom of the case broke off on their own (most noticeable in the second photo above). This does keep the upper bottom side less secure than it used to be with the tabs intact, but it is nothing major and the case still functions as you'd expect without them. I contacted the Speck support to see if I could get a replacement, but they advised me I'd need to send the case back before they could ship a replacement. I understand where they are coming from, but I decided to not take this route and stick with my original case. The reason is that I am constantly on the go with my laptop and refus to let any damage or wear and tear affect the computer during the two weeks I am stuck without a case. The second little negative aspect about the case is that it does scratch fairly easy and some of these scratches can be pretty noticeable up close. I currently have a few scratches on the case that are an off-white color and don't look so great from a cosmetic standpoint. In the end, as long as my laptop itself is protected and the scratches are only on the case then it doesn't bother me all that much.

Overall, I am satisfied with the Speck 15″ Retina Macbook Pro satin case and I can say that it is easily the best case on the market for Retina Macbook Pro users. This case is FAR better than the Kuzy case and it should last several years of use. It looks great, fits perfect, and the satin finish adds a nice touch. Take my advice, spend the extra $20 or so dollars and buy the Speck case over competitors, you will not regret it!
