The cloud storage market has become increasingly large the past few years and there are multiple big name players competing for a consumer's business. This article is going to focus on two of these more popular cloud storage services more specifically, Dropbox and Box. I will do my best to compare the two services through a number of various criteria and then ultimately offering an overall winner based on this criteria.

Pricing & Storage Plans Offered

Dropbox

Box

Winner: Dropbox

Though Box offers more storage for their free users (Dropbox users can gain bonus space if desired), Dropbox is ultimately cheaper for both personal and business plans and you get more storage for the same price. Dropbox also does not have any file size limits (desktop application or mobile app only, browser uploading limits to 300MB) where even Box's highest plan offered only allows 5GB limit per file.

Interface

Winner: Dropbox

This is more of a personal preference, but I have dealt with a large amount of online interfaces for various tech services and I particularly love Dropbox's due to its simplicity and ease of use. Box's interface is not bad by any means, but it can be a bit more overwhelming to new users and the layout is not as pleasing to the eye.

Speed & Performance

Dropbox

4.34MB file took 9.8 seconds to upload to Dropbox

Box

4.34MB file took 17.3 seconds to upload to Box

Winner: Dropbox

When uploading the same file through each service's web interface, I found that Dropbox was almost half as fast and therefore significantly better performing than Box. Box does claim to offer “faster uploads” for business class users, but Dropbox does not discriminate and will offer fast performance for all users regardless of their tier.

Compatible Devices

Dropbox

  • Web browser
  • Mac client
  • Windows client
  • iOS App
  • Android app

Box

  • Web browser
  • Mac client
  • Windows client
  • iOS app
  • Android app

Winner: Tie

Both Dropbox and Box offer the same range of compatible devices and allow users to get access to their files from almost anywhere.

Overall Winner

In the battle between cloud storage services Dropbox and Box, Dropbox is the clear winner packing more storage options, cheaper pricing, and a cleaner interface as well as faster, more efficient performance speeds. It was almost a clean sweep expect for the tie between the two services in terms of compatible devices.

It is no wonder Dropbox has gained the enormous popularity in this competitive cloud service market and according to this matchup it is well-deserved. If you're in the market for a strong, affordable cloud storage solution, I highly recommend checking out what Dropbox has to offer for your needs!
