Ubisoft Delays ‘Watch Dogs’ Release Until Spring 2014

The next-gen consoles brought forth some promising new titles which opened up a new realm of innovation as well as pushed the boundaries in terms of the visual experience. One of these titles was Watch Dogs, was brought to light via various sources from an extend E3 demo to an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

It quickly grew a steady base of gamers whom couldn't wait to get their hands on the title which was set to launch with the new PS4 and Xbox One. Both Sony and Microsoft were offering their new consoles in pre-order bundles which included Watch Dogs.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft has announced today that they will be postponing the much anticipated title until “Spring 2013”. Their reasoning which is posted on their company blog is as follows:

“Our ambition from the start with Watch Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming. It is with this in mind that we’ve made the tough decision to delay the release until spring 2014.

We know a lot of you are probably wondering: Why now? We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.”

While we can appreciate honesty and pride in deciding to wait until the game is perfected before launching it, this announcement leaves many of us in disappointment and a few in confusion. There is good reason for confusion as some gamers pre-ordered a next-gen console that included Watch Dogs and now are unsure of what will happen with their pre-order status, some dreading their pre-order may be cancelled potentially causing them to miss out on receiving a new console at launch. While I'm sure Sony and Microsoft will come forward shortly with solutions to this problem, it still leaves some gamers with a sour taste in their mouth.

From quick research, it seems retailers such as Amazon and Gamestop have put up a tentative release date of June 30th, 2014 although I'd hope to see the title get released prior to this date as that seems just a bit too long of time needed for the last kinks to be worked out.
