Target Mistakenly Ships Xbox One Pre-Orders Early, Temporarily Bans Users Who Try To Use It

A huge internal mistake in Target's shipping department left some Xbox One pre-order customers puzzled when the unreleased console showed up at their door, two weeks earlier than anticipated. Several who received the consoles immediately posted the news of the unexpected arrival on their social media accounts:

When one of these recipients by the Twitter name of MoonlightSwami tried to take the new console online, he was immediately banned and was unable to use any of the online features or download any of the necessary updates. To make matters worse, it seems he also had a copyright strike placed against him from Microsoft after posting an unboxing video of the new console on YouTube.

Xbox's own Major Nelson reached out to Moonlightswami and took matters into his own hands as gamers from around the world united in an attempt overturn what initially appeared to be a permanent ban and potential legal trouble:

According to Engadget, a Microsoft spokesperson commented on the situation stating:

“Due to a retail partner's system issue, a very small number of Xbox One consoles were shipped to consumers before the November 22 street date. We're pleased to see the initial response to Xbox One has been so positive, but given we are still putting the finishing touches on our games, UI and online services, as well as confidential partner and media agreements, these consoles units will be restricted from connecting to Xbox Live until closer to our launch date.”

Now that everything is sorted out thanks to the help of Major Nelson, a curious Twitter used tweeted Shunhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment and asked:

Other users are stating that Sony's PR team should ship Moonlightswami a free PS4 for publicity reasons:

I find the situation to be very odd and it is interesting how a small bug in Target's shipping system could spiral into a big fiasco in such a short time period. All I know is if I received my Xbox One earlier than everyone else, I'd posting about it on my social media accounts just as much and for that Moonlightswami now has gotten himself a free trip to the Xbox One Launch Event. Kudos to you Moonlightswami!
