Microsoft made a low-key release of their new Office Mobile application for the iPhone yesterday. This is the first time a real Office application developed by Microsoft themselves has made its way into the App Store so it is significant news for iPhone owners. The application is free to download, but there is a small catch. In order to use the application, you must be an Office 365 subscriber which costs $99 a year.
The Office Mobile application allows qualified users to create new Word and Excel documents as well as the ability to view and edit documents, spreadsheets, and Powerpoint files that are stored in the cloud or attached to an email. Currently, there is on iPad version of the application, but there is a rumor that this will change in the near future, which would be a potentially large blow to the Microsoft surface. At this time, the application is also limited to U.S. users only, but I'd expect it to include support for other countries in the coming months.
