First Look At The Unreleased 2nd Map For ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (or PUBG as many call it) has been taking the PC gaming world by storm dethroning H1Z1: King of the Kill as the most popular battle royale title. Unlike H1Z1, PUBG focuses on a higher sense of strategy and straight skill when it comes to gunfighting to rise to the top instead of the fast-paced, vehicle-centric gameplay often found in H1Z1.

While the PUBG is still in an ‘Early Access' stage which, it has done extremely well for their developer BlueHole Inc. selling over 4 million copies in the first 13 weeks of its release and constantly holding viewership among the top 5 titles on the popular streaming service, Twitch.

Something a lot of gamers have praised BlueHole for doing since the release is regular updates to PUBG that go beyond simple bug fixes. For example, since the Early Access launch, there are new weather environments, multiple new weapons, improved terrain textures and even new vehicles.

While they have already teased a new vaulting system and custom game ‘zombie' mode, they have been working on adding more maps beyond the original. A few days ago, Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown' Greene posted some screenshots to Twitter which depict the new desert-based map:

While the BlueHole team is primarily based overseas in South Korea, Greene decided to set up shop in Madison, Wisconsin to help cater to well-known terrain artist Shawn Wiederhoeft who is responsible for creating the military base on the original Battlegrounds map. Wiederhoeft has plenty of experience in the industry having worked on the environments in Call of Duty: Ghosts and We Happy Few.

The desert map will be notable smaller than the original PUBG map which will likely make for quicker games and more action in the early game. According to Polygon, the map will span four square kilometers comprised of a mixed, urban environment in Peru. An initial sketch was shared with Game Informer in May which shows a central urban area surrounded by desert towns, sand dunes, and a river oasis.

While this is all great news for PUBG players, the downside is that we don't have any information as to when this new map will be released. While it is only an assumption, I would anticipate the new map to be rolled out before the game launches on the Xbox One later in the year.
