Over the past decade Amazon, has become one of the largest online retailers in existence. Its competitive pricing and Amazon Prime membership model have stirred up enough competition to result in several traditional brick-and-mortar retailers closing their doors. This isn't stopping the Seattle-based e-commerce giant from planning to open their first physical retail location in New York City.
According to a report from the CNBC, the retail location will be on 34th Street in Manhattan across from the Empire State building and is scheduled to open in time for the upcoming holiday season. While we don't expect Amazon to start a trend of opening more physical locations, it makes sense for the company to invest in a brick-and-mortar store in a high-tech, populated city like NYC for increased exposure and convenience.
The benefits of this physical location will be same day pickup for orders placed within the NYC area (depending on inventory) as well as the ability to make returns in person. It will also double as a promotional outlet for their line of Kindle tablets, Fire Phones, and Fire TV devices.
Another competing online retailer, B&H Photo has also been operating a single physical location in New York City for the last 35 years, and it has widely successful with photo and video enthusiasts in the area.
