EA’s Origin Store Opts For New Return Policy On Digital Games

With so much of our lives becoming converted from traditional methods to a digital realm, the video game and software industry is a huge component of this movement. Gone are the days where you had to drive to the nearest electronics retailer to buy a new video game when now you can just fire up your computer, purchase, and download the latest titles from the convenience of your own home.

The PC gaming industry was the first to adopt this type of system and now the next-gen consoles (PS4 & Xbox One) will be running heavily on this technology. Those of you who are PC gamers, probably have heard of Steam which is a service that offers the largest library of digitally downloadable games in existence. Since the beginning they have stuck strictly to a no refunds or exchanges policy on any of their games.

On the other hand, EA Games has launched their own online store called Origin that has adopted a new policy offering PC gamers the “great game guarantee” on all of their purchases. Here is what this “great game guarantee” is defined as:

We stand by our games. If you’re not completely satisfied with your digital download purchase from Origin, you can return it.

The Great Game Guarantee allows you to return EA digital game downloads (PC/Mac) purchased on Origin for a full refund within 24 hours after you first launch the game, within seven days from your date of purchase or within seven days from the game's release date if you pre-purchased/pre-ordered, whichever comes first.

There is a catch though as now all games are eligible for this “great game guarantee”:

DLC and non-EA games purchased on Origin are excluded from the Great Game Guarantee. So, this is a guarantee for full game (a.k.a. “base game”) digital downloads published by EA for now, including full games on pre-order and most full games on promotional discount

If you were wondering DLC content is NOT included in this new policy at this time:

DLC is not eligible for returns.  For now, we’re excited to offer the Great Game Guarantee for full game downloads, and continue to explore how we can expand the program over time.

And lastly, this “great game guarantee” is not offered in all areas at this time. Here is the official word:

US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands will support the Great Game Guarantee at launch.

Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Germany, Russia, Poland, and other regions should stay tuned for further details. The Great Game Guarantee will be available to you soon!

It is also important to note that each return had to be approved and there is a clause that prohibits anyone form abusing the system so you'll be allowed a limited number of refunds in a row. You can read more information about the “great game guarantee” from the source link below.

  • Steam has a GREAT return policy…I’ve returned so many games that weren’t compatible with my PC or I simply didn’t like.
