CES 2016: DISH & Sling TV Press Event Coverage

Today marked the launch of CES 2016 with the inaugural press day. Many companies took to the stage give keynotes on their latest product offerings or company news. Last year, DISH announced many exciting new features for their service subscribers as well as the official launch of Sling TV. This year’s event was no different, with many new advances in DISH’s service offerings as well has further expansion of the Sling TV no-contract platform.

Hopper 3

  • Powered by a BCM7445 quad-core ARM application processor at 1.5 GHz, 21K DMIPS
  • Harnesses a 2TB HD capable of 500 hours of HD recordings or 2,000 of SD content
  • When showing 4K content, the Hopper 3 can decode and output up to 60fps in addition to 10-bit color
  • There is native support for H.264 and H.265, is compatible with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2.
  • This is the first DVR model to support USB 3.0
  • Adds further support for 4K with new and exciting partnerships for on-demand viewing of 4K files
  • New harnesses 16 individual tuners meaning you can simultaneously record 16 different channels at one time
  • “Sports bar mode” now harnesses the 4K resolution to show off four live 1080P channels (ideally sports or news) in a 2×2 rectangular configuration
  • A YouTube app has been directly integrated into the Hopper 3 for browsing and playback of your favorite YouTube content without the need for any third party accessory
  • Increased Netflix integration now adds Netflix content within the Hopper’s universal search results
  • Hopper 3 will launch in early 2016

  • Brand new standalone accessory for DISH subscribers
  • Harnesses 60GB of flash memory and connects to Hopper 2/3 via a MicroUSB (for charging and data transfer)
  • Move up to 100 hours of recorded content from the DVR to the devices 64GB of flash memory
  • Utilizes a secure, private Wi-Fi network that allows users to stream to five devices at once (different shows can be viewed simultaneously)
  • Internal battery lasts four hours of viewing on a single charge
  • Will be available late Q1 for a flat rate of $99

  • ESPN 3 has been added to the standard “Best Of Live TV” package at no extra cost
  • Thousands of live and on-demand events have been added to the service including NCAA championships as well as global sports
  • The Sling TV interface has gotten a revamp with the all new “MY TV” personalized viewing panel that showcases custom recommendations and favorite content
  • Improved discovery system makes the browsing and searching of content easier and more efficient
  • UI is now contextually aware meaning it can adapt to customer behavior, time of day, location, device type and popularity among other attributes
  • Unlike traditional cable and satellite providers who regularly increase their prices annually, Sling TV remains at a $20/month no commitment structure despite the added value of these improvements
