As you've probably heard by now, today marked the date of Apple's coveted yearly iPhone event and as expected they announced the new iPhone 5s as well as the new iPhone 5c model. If you don't have a spare hour to watch the keynote for yourself, then here is a brief summary of everything that happened at the event:

iOS 7

  • iOS 7 will be officially released on September 18th (developers have access to final release already)
  • iTunes Radio will launch on September 18th with iOS 7 and will be free (no ads for iTunes Match customers)
  • Mobile versions of iWork, iMovie, & iPhoto will be free for new iOS device owners
  • iOS 7 has been confirmed to be the first firmware that is 64-bit

  • New polycarbonate design (reinforced with steel)
  • 4-inch Retina display (same as iPhone 5)
  • A6 processor
  • LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi support
  • High capacity battery
  • 8MP back camera with 5-element lens
  • New 1.2MP front-facing camera (better low-light performance)
  • Available in blue, pink, yellow, green, & white
  • On-contract pricing: $99 for 16GB, $199 for 32GB
  • Off-contract pricing: $549 for 16GB, $649 for 32GB
  • Colored protective cases available for $29 each
  • Pre-orders start September 13th (this Friday) and ship on September 20th

  • Looks nearly identical to the existing iPhone 5
  • 64-bit A7 processor
  • M7 motion copressor
  • OpenGL ES 3.0
  • 10 hours of talk time, 10 hours LTE, 250 hours of standby
  • LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi support
  • New Touch ID button replaces standard home button and features a fingerprint identity sensor
  • 8MP rear camera now has a 5-element Apple-design lens with f/2.2 aperture and a 15% larger active sensor area (helps reduce noise)
  • New video capabilities allow for 120fps video recording (perfect for slow-motion shots) in 720-p
  • Built-in digital image stabilization
  • Burst still shooting mode allows for up to 10fps (software will recommend best shot)
  • Automatic exposure adjustment
  • New camera flash technology called True Tone
  • Autofocus matrix metering will improve autofocus capabilities
  • New 1.2MP front-facing camera (better low-light performance)
  • Comes in Space Gray, Gold, & Silver finish
  • On-contract pricing: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB
  • Pre-orders start the 13th (Friday) and the 5s will be available on September 20th

Miscellaneous Announcements

  • The release of the iPhone 5c has allowed the iPhone 4s to now be offered free on-contract
  • Nike briefly discussed an app called Nike+ Move which will allow 5s owners to use the phone's M7 coprocessor to keep track of your activity in real-time for fitness purposes
  • AppleCare+ for iPhone now expanded to France, Italy, and the UK
  • The AppleCare+ pricing has now increased for US customers from $49 to $79 ($30 total increase)
