343 Delays Matchmaking Patch For ‘Halo: The Master Chief Collection’

Early last week, many gamers were met with disappointment as the Halo: The Master Chief Collection launch resulted in a total train wreck. The multiplayer matchmaking features were the primary selling point, but a poor decision to not run a beta caused the servers to buckle under the high traffic load.

Fast forward eight days later and there seems to be no end in sight. None of the playlists seem to work, not even 50% of the time. From my personal experience, the recent patches at the end of last week actually hurt your chances of finding a game with its current state being nearly impossible.  If you are lucky enough to find a game it often requires 10 minutes of searching in a playlist and there is a high probability, the game will start with uneven teams.

Over the weekend, 343 promised a large server patch scheduled for Wednesday 11/19 (today) that would solve the matchmaking crisis as well as many in-game bugs. Again, 343 gives us yet another disappointment due to a last-minute decision to postpone the patch to “later this week”.

Here is 343's official statement on the situation via their website:

This week’s content update, which was originally scheduled for release this Wednesday, 11/19, will now be releasing later this week to allow for additional fixes, as well as the completion of the testing and certification process.

This content update includes a variety of fixes across the title, including Matchmaking performance issues, general UI and game stability improvements, as well as fixes for game-game specific issues in Halo: CE, Halo 2, and Halo 2: Anniversary, and more. The full patch notes will be posted later this week, in advance of the content update release.

Thank you for your continued patience.”

How will this affect the potential holiday sales for the title? It is too early to tell, but it is evident that many loyal fans of the Halo franchise aren't pleased with their purchase thus far:

UPDATE: Patch rolled out yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, matchmaking is still buggy, but it is easier to find a game. Still not perfect, but a much needed step in the right direction.
