ooVoo is a free audio and video chat service available for both PC and Macs.
Technology has come a long way in the past decade resulting in new innovative forms of communication emerging into our everyday lives. Video calling has been a huge hit since Skype introduced it to us back in 2003. Since video calling is in demand by such a vast audience of users, there is plenty of room for new companies to enter the market. One of these competitors, ooVoo is working to push the boundaries on online communication by offering advanced features that are exclusive to them.
First off, I should note that ooVoo is a service based on a freemium business model. Anyone can sign up for a free account and take advantage of the basic features for no hidden costs. There is also a premium subscription that allows advanced features such as screen sharing, video storage, priority support, and an ad-free interface. The premium plan is offered for the affordable price of $29.99 for the year or $2.99 a month. Below you will see a breakdown of which features are available for each plan:
The interface is not as pleasing as I’d like and the design just seems a bit outdated. When it comes down to the interface alone I prefer Skype’s more than ooVoo’s. Performance wise the video and audio quality is as good if not better than Skype’s. ooVoo’s software seems to have noticeably less connection and freezing issues which is one of the major downfalls of the Skype client. Video conferencing calling on ooVoo supports up to 12 users in the same conference even for free users whereas Skype only supports 10 simultaneous users for premium users only.
Another cool feature that is exclusive only to ooVoo is the ability to leave video messages for your contacts therefore allowing video communication without requiring your intended recipient to be logged into the client at the same time to receive video. ooVoo is also supported by multiple platforms including PC, Mac, Android, iOS, and through Facebook.
If you can get back to the lack of an attractive interface, the performance of this service should please any new users that give the service a shot. I think ooVoo is one of the top audio and video communication services offered on the web and their free account has more than enough features for the average person to take advantage of. Sign up for a free account and see what you think!
