HostGator is a web hosting company that has been around since 2002. It is a world-leading provider of web hosting to clients from over 200 countries. According to their website, they host over 8 million websites accounting for 1% of the total websites found on the Internet. Their headquarters is based in Houston, Texas and employ over 750 people. Unlike Fatcow, this web hosting company offers many different levels of web hosting plans including Shared, Reseller, VPS, and Dedicated server packages. This review will be based on my own personal experience using the “Baby” shared hosting plan that is the 2nd out of the 3 tiers of shared hosting offered.

Company Reputation

HostGator has been involved in the industry since 2002 and has developed a respectably positive relationship among its customers. If you visit any major webmaster or website forum you will likely see that the vast majority of the community's members either are already HostGator customers or have nothing, but good things to say about the company. HostGator has always been very customer orientated meaning they truly lived by the motto the “customer is always right”. They do have a reputation of being on the more expensive end of the shared hosting plans, but this is not a real downfall since it is seen as more of a “premium” service providing greater benefits for only a few additional dollars difference a month.

Customer Service

HostGator a 24/7 support system in place to help anyone with web hosting issues no matter what time of day it may be. Their support representatives are top notch especially  in comparison to the majority of competing web hosts (such as NetFirms or Fatcow). They offer phone, email, and chat support of which I have personally dealt with all 3 with no complaints. Every representative I had been in contact with was knowledgeable about the product and was quickly able to answer my questions without having to put me on hold to ask someone else the answer to the question.

I'd have to say the support is one top factors for choosing HostGator as a web host. If you are new to websites and web hosting in general you really should want to deal with knowledgeable like HostGator provides otherwise from experience I would bet you will likely have to waste hours of your time dealing competitor's poorly run support teams (I have dealt with this before and trust me it is not an enjoyable experience).

In terms of the Fatcow “Baby” hosting plan that I have the experience with, the features given with the specific plan are very pleasing. The ones that are worth noting are unlimited domains, cPanel with Fantastico Deluxe (auto installer of WordPress, Drupal, and many more), unlimited email accounts, and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. They also offer a $100 coupon to Google Adwords which is a nice addition for anyone with a small business who wants some free advertising dollars.

The HostGator “Baby” plan works incredibly well. The cPanel makes everything easy to manage and can make changes to the back-end quickly and easily. Thanks to Fantasico Deluxe I'm able to install WordPress on any new domains in a matter of minutes (stay tuned for a video tutorial of this!).You can see a brief look at my personal HostGator cPanel in the tutorial video above. The speed and uptime of this hosting plan is remarkable for the reasonable monthly price. Since I bought this hosting plan back in March of last year there has been less than 5 occasions where  my site has been down and each of those times I was notified by HostGator before hand that there was maintenance to my server and to expect a short down time to occur. In terms of speed the results below speak for themselves!

The only downfall of the “shared” hosting plan is that although it says unlimited bandwidth it obviously cannot be. If you get too much traffic they will ask you to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server. This is the right move regardless since a shared hosting plan with a lot of traffic can get bogged down so the increase in speed and performance when you upgrade will be significant.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think the HostGator is the top contender out of all the shared hosting plans available. With their well-trained and helpful staff, great features like cPanel, a 99.9% up-time guarantee, and stellar performance speeds it truly is the real deal. It may be a couple dollars more expensive per month, but you get what you pay for and web hosting is not something you should be slacking on just to save a couple bucks.
