PROs
- IQ (including low light) were of course noticeably improved on the Keymission (better color rendition, more detail, more uniform noise, just overall superior). Much of that could probably be attributed to the 4k on the Keymission vs the 2.7k on the GoPro.
- Construction of the Keymission I was quite pleased with, didn't feel cheap or as bulky as I thought it would with the giant lens protector
- Menus were simple enough for me to navigate, buttons were fine and worked without any issue (yeah they're plastic buttons but so are my D810's)
- Menu layout was fine for me, but I'm used to Nikons, the lack of a touchscreen didn't bother me as there's 3 dedicated buttons all in a convenient location used to navigate the menus (unlike my GoPro's cryptic button combinations)
- Loop recording is an option (of course)
- Remote worked fine for me
- Dedicated photo and video buttons (one reviewer said there's no way to turn it off - you can just hold down the red power / video button that turns it on to turn it off)
CONs (for me) can be lumped into one giant CON - power (the electrical kind)
- You're only going to get around a half hour recording 4k (vs say almost 2h on a Yi 4k)
- The unit cannot be powered from USB alone and cannot be used while the battery is in the unit and charging (at least not with a standard USB cable + 2.1a car charger) and Nikon estimates a 3 HOUR charge time
NOT TESTED (because the power delivery does not fit my use case I had already decided there's no reason for me to keep the Keymission)
- Apps
It's a decent first attempt but with so much experienced competition, I'm not sure how Nikon plans on making this a viable product line.
------
The KeyMission 170 is a solid camera. I have not compared it to the Hero 5, but it does blow away my Hero 3 for image quality. The 170 does very well in low-light situations, with minimal graininess. I had only a little trouble setting up the 170 with my iPhone 7+. Just make sure you hit "Next" on the camera's LCD when it shows the PIN; that finalizes the connection. Otherwise, you may sit there for a long time expecting to have to enter the PIN on your phone, which does not happen (at least for me). It took me three tries before I finally tried pushing the Next option while the PIN was displayed. After that, I have had not trouble at all with the Phone and Camera pairing. You can pair up to five devices to the camera (although only one can be connected at a time). Once paired, you must apparently change the assigned device manually in the camera by going into the Network Settings -> Bluetooth ->Paired Devices. Unfortunately this has not yet worked for me. I am having to re-pair devices each time. I will contact Nikon support to see what's going on.
The other issue I still have is that the App will not allow remote recording using my iPhone 7+ (but works fine with my iPad Pro). It gives a constant error "Preparing to Connect. Try Again Later", whatever the means. I will continue to work on this and will post a solution if I find one. On the iPadPro, the remote camera works great. Fast response and very little image lag. One more app drawback... it seems that you can only pair a 360 OR 170 camera with the app; not both. I had SnapBridge on my iPhone 7 paired with my 170, and it refused to see my 360 until I unpaired the 170. Nikon needs to fix this.
Sound quality is very good, and the menu allows you to add wind noise reduction, which is somewhat effective. The Snapbridge app is decent but could use some work. It allows you to change all of the camera's settings, and you can also shoot remotely (which, as I mentioned, I have not gotten to work yet). To download video to your mobile device, you must first connect to the 170 via WiFi. The WiFi password is under Network Settings on the Camera. The video is easily downloaded to a desktop using Photos, FinalCut, and Image Capture on my Mac. The image quality on the computer is very, very good. I would love to see how it compares to the Hero 5, but I am happy with the 170's lens and sensor combination so far.
The battery must be in the camera to be charged. You can use the camera while it is being charged, which is great for remote shooting.
The 170 comes with a mount, a flat adhesive pad, a curved adhesive pad, battery, microUSB cord, charger, and a pre-paired remote w/battery. You will need to purchase a fast micro SD card. I bought a 64 GB SanDisk Extreme Plus and it works great.
Overall, this is a good camera for the price. It's all about image quality, and the 170 impresses there. Functionality is also very good, with lots of options such as time lapse, still images during video, wind noise reduction, vertical flip, image comments, copyright notices on your images, and more. Four stars for the 170 as a camera, and two stars for the App. But the use of the App is optional; but would be good if it was more polished.
UPDATE Nov 4 Camera paired easily to my iPhone. Just have to do it right! Took first pics and video -- totally awesome. Just have to watch that my hand doesn't get into the frame, at 15mm. Only thing I don't like is the 8 megapixel (on a 12 megapixel sensor)! Okay for video but not good enough for stills.
