ABOUT AUDEZE
Audeze started in 2008 in a garage (of course!) when its founders came across a revolutionary flexible circuit material developed for NASA. Realizing this could be a great advance in planar magnetic technology, they first started to make pro audio PA speakers, but dropped this project and started making headphones – the LCD-1.
Taking this first headphone to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, it was a tremendous hit, and that success launched the company. Hanging on that garage wall was the 2001 Space Odyssey poster, and that inspired the company’s name. The founders wanted a name that had something to do with a “journey through audio,” so Odyssey would be perfect, and that’s how the name Audeze (pronounced “odyssey”) was born.
AUDEZE'S PLANAR MAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY
Acoustically engineered for accuracy

Near zero distortion

These headphones are a bit heavy, but I can say in wearing them for hours on end, that never crosses my mind. They are the most comfortable phones I have, mostly because the ear cushions are big, soft, and deep enough to accommodate my large ears, and keep the driver housings completely off my ears. The build quality is superb. The cable that comes supplied is delightfully supple, light, non-microphonic, and the right length with the best connectors in headphonedom. As you might guess, second market suppliers offer alternative high-end cables in balanced configuration if desired, for reasonable prices, right here at Amazon. With my amp, the balanced cables I have used with these cans are improvements in definition and clarity, and punch, and more so with some Chinese or Polish cables than the ones sold separately by Audeze. As far as cables go, your experience will vary, depending largely on your amp, and the differences are small compared to the provided cable. The box these ship in will serve as a case for them if needed., but isn't anything but a very protective box.
Specifically concerning the sound; It is rare in any headphone to have a frequency response that is as true, smooth and flat out as right as these...flat? yes, in that.....
1) Bass does exactly what it should, as loud as it should, at the deepest audible frequencies, and is accurate and detailed and powerful at all volumes without a hint of strain, and no bloat or bleeding into the midrange, and with great impact when the music calls for it ....Unbeatable Bass...joins beautifully to the .....
2) Midrange....smooth and natural with out a trace of inaccuracy that is known as coloration. Voices of people and
instruments are as real as they get. You can hear detail and textures down to the micro level without ever feeling that anything is left out or is overplayed...which, in equal part is presented in the.......
3) Treble...the highs here are the best balanced and coherent that I have ever heard in any headphone. Combined with the beautifully done bass and midrange, the highs have the air and space, and detail in transients and upper harmonics that make the listening experience as close as I have heard to pure microphone feed off the best microphones and mic preamps...in fact, sets a new standard for me in my recording studio for hearing my microphones, mixes, and is the go-to for mastering CDs...yes.. that good!
Closed back; ...Not usually found with this design, these have all the soundstage of the Focal Clear, but with better depth, and better instrument separation and definition in the low end. The signal to noise ratio of closed cans, compared to open back design, is much much better, in anything but the absolute quietest environments. I find in my house, these are the best for immersive listening without sound intrusion, and without sound leakage to others in the vicinity.
Overall, I think these are, and probable will remain, my reference headphones. I have proven to myself that spending more, even twice as much for headphones, will not give me better headphones. A good amp is always recommended, and when paired, for example, with the Jotunheim by Schiit, in balanced drive, (or other amps, I'm not familiar with ), these are the best I've heard for my purposes, comfortable, well built, with a perfectly balanced sound that checks all the boxes for tonal and harmonic accuracy ( even down to the lowest frequencies ), immersiveness and detail, imaging, air, and separation, dynamics, and overall coherency at any volume level.
A follow-up.....A bit of research that you might find useful:
I've tried five different balanced cables and have found some I prefer hands down. After trying cables with silver conductors, I found copper always sounds better, more refined, and more natural. I prefer this Polish made one here at Amazon, It comes in various lengths, is built from professional quality parts, and sounds better than any other, including the Audeze offering;
(search here) ........."Professional Handmade Heavy Duty Audeze LCD-2 LCD-3 LCD-4 LCD-X Replacement Y Splitter Lead Neutrik 4-Pin XLR Male to 2x Rean 4-Pin Mini XLR Female (Balanced) Van Damme Cable [2m]"
My daily drivers are the modi2 set up with beyerdynamic 990dt and 770s. I have been looking to upgrade for a while and tried the monolith m1060 as well as the beyerdynamic 1770. I ended up returning both of them. M1060 was too flat and didn't really do much for me. The 1770 sounded great but farfar too bassy.
I'm very much enjoying these. I know they are alot of money but I am currently having a hard time convincing my self they are not worth it. imaging is amazing and sound staging is amazing.
Update: I have never heard headphones that layer as well as these do as well as make sounds come from behind my head. They are fast enough to have detail in the distortion ( monolord - audhumbla) as well as meaty as all hell while staying delicate and intricate. When switching pace to Iron and Wine / Bruno Major/ Dawes they are very light and whimsical. While listening to a acoustic song by dawes a image in my mind poped up of the dry wood inside of the acoustic guitar because of the wood warm acoustic sound. incredible.
Update 2- I bought and returned the LCD 2 open backs. Mainly because where I work is Loud. I am currently playing though a shiit multibit and a lyr 3 the sound to me after about testing is exactly the same to a degree. The opens obviously have a little bit bigger sound stage and the instruments sounds more light and airy on the opens. Other than that they are extremely similar. Still very very very happy.
My only cons right now :
- I use tidl often but these are so good they make spotify sounds like absolute trash.
- No carry case, no leather carry sack. - Wtf? I understand these are not travel headphones but still.

Le LCD 2-C Closed Back répond parfaitement à mes attentes.
