Great Router - Everything I had hoped for

Great Router - Everything I had hoped for
We are a household with quite a few technology gadgets, so I knew it was only a matter of time, until my wireless router would reach its limits. This moment arrived, when I added an Echo Dot to our equipment. Alexa would play a song for 30 seconds then stop. Nothing could get her to work again. Both, Alexa and Echo Dot were not able to download music content. After Amazon tech support got involved, we found out that I obviously had a bandwidth problem, and my wifi router has no QoS function. That was really bad news, since we are in the process of installing wifi-based security cameras. So after reading countless reviews all over the Internet and here on Amazon about the best routers on the market, I decided to try the Nighthawk R8500.I received the device on Saturday. When I unpacked it, I was initially shocked about the size. Even so many reviews had mentioned that the R8500 was larger than your regular router, I didn't expect it to be about the size of a blueray player. My husband even jokingly asked if I was trying to connect to Mars, and if NASA had developed this router ;-) After some smaller hiccups during installation that were quickly resolved by Netgear tech support, the virtual part of our world literally changed! Our internet provider is Comcast, and we have an Internet subscription for up to 150 Mbps. However, with my old gateway/ router combination I was able to get a maximum of around 35 Mbps on good days. Streaming from my Firestick outside on the lanai was always a pain in the neck; we almost always received the warning screen, that we had a low-quality connection and that buffering might occur. What a difference the Nighthawk makes!!We live in a ca. 2,500 Sft typical Florida ranch style home, built with lots of concrete and plaster. We run 2 smart TVs, 3 Firesticks, 2 tablets, 2 cellphones, a laptop, 2 wireless printers, an Amazon Echo, and Echo Dot, and a game console. The Nighthawk manages very well. I speed test my internet frequently, and the lowest download speed I had, sitting outside on my lanai, was around 57 Mbps, but most of the time it is in the high 80s! My Amazon devices are working well again without any problems. We are more than pleased with the initial results. So far we didn't experience any dropped connections, or signs of instability. We will install our wifi-based security system this week. I will update this review accordingly, in the unlikely case of problems. This router has a fairly high price tag, however, the way things seem to work out, I am pretty confident that I bought the right router for our ever evolving home automation. The only thing "negative" is that Netgear only provides 90 days of free technical support. I feel a router of this price category should qualify for at least a full year of tech support.I am neither a gamer, nor am I a tech wiz. I do a lot of research on forums, when I am faced with technology problems, and get by pretty good with that.In summary I'd have to say that buying the Nighthawk was definitely a smart decision. If it keeps going as it is now, it is definitely the right router for our purposes.I added to screenshots of speed tests, before and after the Nighthawk went into service. Both tests were taken, while sitting outside on my lanai.

What a surprise. I could accept DOA.
But being sold item by Amazon, which was manufactured 2 years ago according to serial number hurts. $350 for 2 year old router.

After contacting Netgear technical support the router had two problems, no 5GHz signal and took sometimes up to 15 minutes to boot.
Netgear asked me for sale receipt, as according to serial number unit was 2 years old. They let it go this time.

    Today: April 5th, 2018.
Amazon is in process of shipping new router, no qualms there. Should be here tomorrow, but did not leave Amazon.ca as of yet. We will see.

Contacted NETGEAR and see that my support for the new router (it is now official) expired March 01, 2017 (that is not a misprint) yes it expired one year before I purchased it as it was manufactured 2 years ago (see attached picture. I asked how I can remove my passwords since the router will not even dish out IP address and power red light stays on since it is a hardware failure. Can not be done.

So, for those of you make sure you can prove your purchase to NETGEAR or you will be out of luck.

Not sure why I even bother with replacement, but I really wanted this router to work. Specifications are nice, and I am looking for VPN router. For the money it is not even impressively built. Antennas rattle around when you carry it, when it did work, I did not really noticed any better performance then my current Linksys EA6900 (but that could be, NETGEAR was faulty right from the start). I already pre-sold the Linksys EA6900, so I am limping along with my Linksys WMP54G flashed with dd-wrt 3rd party software.

I am far from novice, to put up with this, but the replacement better be solid/flawless or it is going back for refund. Stay tuned.

    April 10th 2018,
New replaced (By Amazon) NETGEAR Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Tri-Band Quad-Stream WiFi Router (R8500-100NAS) has been in service for couple of days. Nice router as it should be.Let's hope it stays this way. It is a still 2 year old product and I had to sent NETGEAR a prove of purchase. Router should be more in 3 to 4 star category, however the experience to receive it and get it working I think It deserves 1 star.
If it was not purchased from amazon, thank to their policy, I would not touch this router.
    New update: April 24, 2018,
After receiving a replacement router from Amazon, I almost felt guilty with one star. Well that is not the case today. I should have listened to the others comments. Even the reviews were not overly upbeat. Should have got money back. It lasted 2 weeks with no issues, so I know the configurations was good. All of the sudden my wife said she is loosing wireless internet connection for few minutes and then connection resumes. Lets not anybody forget this was the flagship of the routers, right there with another junk the Asus crab.
This router does no have even a basics like IP lease time and time set for login time. Forget it, another bad experience. As far Amazon goes, thumbs down, I purchase it locally and return it without begging. Maybe few bucks more, but my health is more important.
