      Best Unit for the Money!

      Best Unit for the Money!
I got this unit late, it is a 2011 model and I got it in early December, so I've only had it for about a month. If you are the type of person who has to have the latest model everyime they come out, this unit is not for you.I too read the reviews and noticed that there are way more positive reviews than negative, that and the low price compared to the newer models was what made me purchase this unit and I'm so glad I did.I got the 1450LMT. (The one with Lifetime Maps and Traffic and without Bluetooth)The first thing I did when I got it was registered it on MyGarmin.com and it said that there were software and map updates available so I installed the updates as well as installed some custom vehicle icons from the Garmin Garage.Updating the maps is easy, but it does take some time because of the file size of the maps. I have really fast internet so it only took about 15mins, but for slower internet it can take 45mins to an hour. You have 2 options when it comes to downloading the maps, you can download a program called Garmin Lifetime Updater which checks for new map updates and lets you know when they become available, or you can choose to download the update from MyDashboard in MyGarmin as a one time update which will install a temporary installer to install that one map update.I recommend the Garmin Lifetime Updater, because if you choose the other method, you will have to connect your unit to your PC every time you want to check for map updates. With the Garmin Lifetime Updater, it remembers what model you have and you check for map updates without having your unit connected and if it finds an update, you know to connect it. Garmin says that map updates are usually available only 4 times a year(every 3 months) so you won't have to update the maps too often.Software updates are available much more frequently than map updates and require your device to be connected to your PC, because you download them straight from the MyGarmin MyDashboard. Software updates are for the main software which runs the unit. When you first turn the unit on, it will take about 1-3mins to acquire the satellites for the first time. Once it aquires them, it will be activated and from that point on it will only take a few seconds after you turn it on to aquire them again. There are many options available for how you want it to calculate routes, so be sure to go through the tools and settings before you use it so that it can calculate the routes to your preferred settings. Some of the routes it calculates may not be the very best, but they aren't too bad. For example: You can make a right turn at the next street and then a left onto the highway you need, but the unit might tell you to go straight a few streets before turning onto the highway. The end result either way is that you get to your highway then destination without any confusion which is what matters most. The POIs are amazingly accurate and up-to-date because they update with the map. You will find that the unit finds even the newest of places with great accuracy. The traffic feature is great too, you can see when there are backups and slow traffic on your route and get a detour around them. The only thing I don't like about this is that there are offers that popup on the screen and you can't disable them without disabling traffic updates. You can however, close each offer as they popup by tapping it and then tapping the back button. You can also set a passcode if you want for security. There are also EcoRoute options so you can track your fuel consumption and spending and you can view milage reports of your driving. Everytime you get gas, change the price in settings and it will keep track of the cost accurately.Overall I love this unit and use it all the time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is on a budget and wants a unit that is cost friendly while being better rated than newer and more expensive units. To be honest, even if I had the money for the newer models, I would still get this one, because if you check the reviews of the newer models, there are far more bugs and problems being mentioned than for this model. The lifetime maps are traffic are a huge plus because you don't have to shell out anymore money to buy them.I recommend getting the Garmin Portable Friction Mount - Frustration Free Packaging with this unit if you wish to mount it on the dashboard instead of the windshield, I did and I think it's the best way to drive with this unit. There are two ways to charge it, either by the vehicle cord or USB cord. There is no wall adapter included, but you can by it separately if you want. You shouldn't need it though. I can't really speak about battery life cause I never ran the battery all the way down, but it is supposed to last 3 hours. The only time I use it on battery is when I'm in the house and I want to enter destinations for a future trip.Anyway, I hope you found this review helpful. If you have any questions, just reply to this review and I will answer then as soon as I can.I may even come back later and upload some screenshots from the unit for you.
