At E3 2013, Microsoft announced they would begin running a new service called ‘Games With Gold”. This allowed Xbox Live subscribers access to two different Xbox 360 titles each month via a free download. If you decide to download one or both of the titles you gain permanent ownership the title(s) and can play/download either whenever you’d like. Previous Xbox 360 titles offered through the promo include Halo 3, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Fable 3.
Xbox’s own Major Nelson revealed on Twitter this morning that the next-gen Xbox One will include the same ‘Games With Gold’ promotion although it will not begin until sometime in 2014.
Great news: Access to free games each month is coming for Xbox Live Gold members on #XboxOne – Details coming later in 2014

This is excellent news for most gamers who want to spend the money on the Xbox One’s premium price yet don’t want to spend $60 every month buying a new game. While it is likely these free titles won’t include popular releases like Call of Duty Ghosts or Battlefield 4, a free game is something not many people will turn away.
Sony runs a similar promo throughout their PlayStation Plus membership and have already announced that PS4 owners will have free access to Resogun and Contrast as soon as the console launches.
