1: Position. NEEDED WEDGE PLATE. My original doorbell sat 90 degrees from my door, so with the camera I was not able to see down the long walkway to my house. This was remedied with the Skybell Wedge plate they have for sale. Very easy to do, and the wedge plate comes with its own instructions. Also, I was able to angle it slightly down as well as forward to better center the person in the camera.
2: Wiring. NEEDED TO EXTEND WIRES TO DOORBELL. The original wiring for my doorbell was VERY short. I soldered longer wires to the original ones and shrinks wrapped them. You can also use wire crimps, but I had a soldering iron so I used that instead.
3. More wiring. NEEDS DIGITAL DOORBELL ADAPTER FOR DIGITAL DOORBELLS. My original doorbell was connected to a digital chime, so per the digital chimes instructions I had a diode wired across the contacts on the original doorbell. If you have this setup DO NOT use a diode with the skybell unless you want to start a fire. This was remedied with the Skybell Digital doorbell adapter they have for sale which wires not behind the doorbell but onto the chime itself. Very easy to do, and the adapter comes with its own instructions.
4. More wiring still. NEEDED NEW TRANSFORMER. I have two doorbells, so I had bought TWO Skybells for front and kitchen doors. You need digital doorbell adapters for each digital chime if you have more than one like me. Once the adapters and doorbells were all wired up the kitchen doorbell wasn't getting consistent power. It would charge for a while (indicated by a certain combo of flashing lights) then the lights would shut off. Did my due diligence and rechecked all connections and found that the small transformer (which was mounted to the ceiling in my pantry) was extremely hot!. Not just transformer hot either. My original transformer was over 40 yrs old and their output degrades over time. So I installed a new one. Very easy, used the Honeywell with output of 16 V AC 10 VA.
5. Networking. NEEDED TO MODIFY MY WIFI. This bit was actually a blessing in disguise. Previously I was using an Apple time capsule as my main wifi router and was using a wireless airport express as an extender. When I installed the doorbells they both connected to the network easily enough but always reported fair/poor signal. I attempted to add wireless extenders but this inexplicably only made the signal worse to the doorbells. A little googling revealed that when you extend a wireless network it the signal gets divided by the number of routers. In other words, my original wifi was only at 50% of the signal and when I added more extenders the doorbells were basically getting 25% of the full signal. No wonder they couldn't connect! I removed the extra extenders and ran an ethernet cable through the attic to hardwire the two wifi devices together, and, viola! Both Skybells connected and in the green for signal strength.
The recent updated iPhone app works great with the new iOS 12. The app controls pretty much everything you would want to control. It lets you change the quality of the video for slower connections, and outputs all the way up to 1080p. Videos are available right on the app and can be downloaded to your mobile device if needed. Videon quality is excellent too.
Pros:
Daytime and nighttime video is excellent.
Audio works well.
Unit is very attractive and puts out extra light for nighttime viewing.
Comes with a drill bit if needed for installation. Mine matched up with the previous holes.
Free video storage and no subscription fee!
Good support from the company.
Cons:
Motion sensor doesn't always pick up until the person is right to the door. Of course, it usually starts recording before they ring the bell anyway.
Had to update wiring, transformer, and wifi. Not a big deal considering that the infrastructure from 45 yrs ago wasn't necessarily prepared for the digital age.
All in all, not too bad to install, and I have been using it for a couple of months now with no more issues.

More Cons
1) Constantly having to do a hard reset. On the order of once every 2 months.
2) And after the last reset it no longer does notifications.
3) And after the last reset it no longer records anything. Maybe a problem with their server.
4) I have been unable to share the device with other users. It worked once but after one of the resets, it no longer allows sharing to the same people that it was previously shared.
Need a new device.
First Review:
Overall I am giving this 4 stars because it does what it is supposed to do. But it could be much, much better. Note that I am not judging video quality as I am using the lower quality 720P setting due to my poor internet connection at the bell.
PROs
-Field of View or viewing angle. 180 degrees. This is probably too wide for some applications but it works for our situation.
-Functionality (motion detection, notifications, 2 way audio, video recordings for motion detection, button press, and on demand live viewing) are all very in good features.
-Free cloud storage for a rolling 7 days of video.
-3 second look ahead seems to capture almost all motion. Sometimes it seems to be a 10 second look ahead.
-We have a very poor internet connection to the doorbell, less than the recommended, but it still works well on lower quality video settings. Waiting for a WIFI extender to improve it.
CONs
-Motion detection low setting is not low enough for our situation. The doorbell is set up about 5 feet from the curb. Passing cars, about 15 feet from the doorbell are always detected.
-There are no motion detection zones (which other cameras use) which could help to reduce motion detection events.
-No anti-theft deterrents. OK, I know that a stolen device is not going to be usable because the thief won't be able to register it which is required for use. I also know that Skybell will give you a new doorbell if yours is stolen BUT, many thieves are not going to know that the stolen device is inoperable and the victim still has to pay $20 for shipping along with all the inconveniences of filing a police report, being doorbell-less for a while, reinstalling it, etc. SkyBell should sell some type of deterrent just for piece of mind. A simple metal flange around the outside, attached with tamper resistant screws would be an easy option. For example, see this:
Stainless 3" 2-Bolt 304 Exhaust Flange (QTY 1) - Stainless Bros 603-07620-0000
(there are probably cheaper versions).
-At 180 degree field of view, the videos have a severe fisheye effect. There should be a built-in capability to remove the fisheye effect like newer GoPros have.
-I bought the SkyBell doorbell in part because I read that it was compatible with Google Home. Well, you can add the device through Google Assistant on Android but the method is quite different than other supported Home devices. The SkyBell is not listed in Google Assistant's Home Control->Add Device settings and it's not documented how to add it. I did a Google search for "Skybell Google Assistant", selected the first item that appeared which was not an internet link. This opened Google Assistant. I pressed the link button. Once added, all you can really do is tell Google Assistant to record ("Talk to SkyBell", "Record Video"). Even after adding the device, it does not show up as an added device in Assistant. My vision is to have an applet or command set that can detect the doorbell press and, if our TV is on, to cast the doorbell live video to the TV.
-The device seems to be made of very lightweight plastic. Does not seem very sturdy.
-No local storage of video. It would be great if there was an option to save recordings to a network drive in case internet goes down.
-Extra charge for angled wedge mounting plate. $15 for a small piece of plastic. Geez. I am going to use a wedge cut from some scrap wood instead. Zero cost.
-Recorded videos can be viewed, paused, deleted, and downloaded. That's good, but I wish that there were additional capabilities such as a better way to advance and rewind videos, and the ability to take a snapshot at any point in the video without having to download and manipulate a file, and a pinch and zoom on a paused video.
-The slider on video display jumps too far forward and backwards. It's practically useless.
-The thumbnails for motion event videos sometimes shows the cause of the motion but sometimes seem to just show the first frame.
-Thumbnails of videos sometimes don't display at all and just show as gray.
-My nighttime videos start very bright but sometimes become pixelated for a few seconds as the video become much darker.
-When motion is detected, the recorded video is always around 33 seconds even if the motion stopped after just a few seconds. I wish this was configurable, for example, between 10-30 seconds.
NITPICKING
-When returning to the list of clips after viewing a clip, the app should indicate which clip was just viewed. Otherwise one needs to remember the start time to avoid mistakenly selecting the same clip over and over.
-The name of the SkyBell device, which can be entered and changed in the app, is not shown in my router's connected device list. It should, just like any other device, to make it easy to distinguish from other connected devices.
-Should real time monitoring, automatically save the clip, like it does? I don't think so. There should be a manual record button.
-It would be nice if I could cast the live stream or recorded video, directly from the SkyBell HD app to my TV using Chromecast. There is no cast option.
BOTTOM LINE.
Although my list of CONS is quite large the basic capabilities of the product are great. I am glad we purchased the product and would recommend it to others.
Top reviews from other countries
This is not suitable for MX country since here We do not have the standard 40V. We run at 120V so this creepy gadget need to be adapted with a transformer which will increase the price of your investment. Needs more flexibility in my opinion
The idea of a electronic doorbell that allowed me to monitor my front door. Installation was tricky and required purchaser to find there own chimes and transformer. I was lucky because I had a friend who had been through all this and I purchased same door chime and transformer he used.
Disliked
Day 1 of installation I discovered volume on Skybell speaker when talking to a caller was very quiet and got in touch with support. I just got the runaround from Support as they guessed at solutions. In the end I decided to live with speaker defect. That was a mistake I should have returned the Skybell then and there.
Liked
However, with the exception of the speaker defect the doorbell worked fine until just after the warranty period.
Disliked
Around this time in addition to the defective speaker the Skybell started acting up, it would randomly disconnect itself and then I would have to reconnect it. In the meantime I would miss parcel deliveries in particular and then have to drive to the post office. Most annoying! The deterioration continued and the Skybell stopped activating the indoor chimes. I got in touch with Support as as charming as they were they offered no solution.
I can't remember how many things I tried and at one point the customer service rep told me my Skybell was faulty and I would need to buy a new one. I agreed it was faulty.
Given I first reported the volume issue in the first couple of months I asked for a replacement under warranty. The diagnosed then changed and customer service blamed all the other components and said I would need to uninstall and replace them. Approximate cost of removing and replacing these working components is around $500 with labour so I am reluctant to do that.
My last communication with Skybell customer service was where the rep told me "I enjoyed our conversation this week as we went through troubleshooting procedures with your SkyBell. It was refreshing to hear how dedicated you were in getting your SkyBell up and running." I'm glad he had fun however the doorbell doesn't work and this has been nothing but trouble for me. I have a useless $800 doorbell.
I'm off to investigate Ring
