I wanted a decent TV with good features, great picture, wifi, within my $400 price range (yes I got a really good deal on this TV), but size was the primary criteria for me: space constraints kept me from going bigger. I read many, many reviews before buying this TV, but I was not dissuaded by user reports of problems, setup issues and endless complaints about the "smart" apps, Netflix specifically.
As far as the actual TV goes, the picture is great, the sound is great. This TV works very well in my master bedroom mounted 12 feet from the headboard of the bed. It's actually a very generous screen size at that distance, IMO. Although I am not watching HD sports on this TV, the rendering engine has not disappointed me yet. Though it is only 60Hz, which is the maximum HDTV standard at this time anyway (HDTV Hz max explained here:http://www.cnet.com/news/fake-refresh-rates-is-your-tv-really-120hz/), Samsung boasts a stat of 120 CMR, which means Clear Motion Refresh (explained here: http://www.samsung.com/us/article/clear-motion-rate-a-new-standard-for-motion-clarity) which relies on the Hyper Real video processing engine to compensate the motion blur common to HD sets today.
I had no problem joining this TV to my home wifi but I did have terrible Smart Hub issues initially. It would load but nothing would work, then it would lock up and I had to power cycle the TV to get it to respond. Turns out most of my connectivity issues were due to wireless encryption incompatibility; too much security is not a good thing for this TV. Use WPA/WPA2. For Smart Hub to work correctly, make sure your wifi network is configured and secured correctly and you're GTG. And though Netflix was slow to get going, I had to endure lots of updates after initial setup, after Smart Hub and most of the apps were updated, all things worked perfectly.
While I still feel that Smart TV technology has a long way to go, however. Faster processors, optimized apps, tons of ram and lots of bandwidth will fix all the current "issues" I find with many Smart TVs, and set top boxes for that matter. Luckily, technology and capitalism are taking us there, quickly. That said, this is a great TV for right now and tomorrow.
Other than that this is a glorious TV in it's size class. Hopefully some smart company will actually produce a real smart TV, with an actual computer embedded in it (ehem, Apple, where are you on that?) and will address the clunkiness that most so called "smart" TVs exhibit - speed is king. For now, I'm very happy with this TV. In short, buy it, you won't be sorry.
After owning this TV for about 2 months I have to say that my only criticism is the speed of the Smart Hub; it can be slow. Most frustrating is that it doesn't always provide good feedback when updates are needed or being installed, which seem rather frequent. Now I know that delays in loading the app console is probably an indication of an update downloading or installing. C'mon Samsung, it's all about the user experience, communicate on-screen and let us know what the hold up is.
I purchased it based on the following features:
- It is a smart HDTV, LED - 60Hz and this year's model available at considerably better price as compared to even last year models with similar features. Though, I would have been very happy if I could have closed the deal at $ 650 :-p
I did see the earlier reviews for this TV but most seemed like user training issues.
The sound/picture quality is excellent. Picture quality will seem dull with the eco friendly setting of Standard. However, it is configurable per your liking and the user manual is very effective in identifying and setting up your needs. 3 HDMI + 2 USB available
Setting up Network/WI FI is also very easy.
Depending on Internet speed, the smart TV works good. Youtube videos does not stream so fast for me directly through the TV but when I connect to my laptop through HDMI, it just works fine.
Movies through Netflix are great. No 3D but I did not want it. The LED TV comparison chart that Amazon provides is very helpful in determining what features you need and what you do not need.
The Kids stories is very useful for my 3 yr old son. Recently saw our first 1080p HD movie "Journey to the center of the earth" and it was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Movie files with .vob,.avi and .wmv works perfect. I have not tried others yet. Even, if some do not work, there are many sites where we have converters available. So this is not a big deal too.
On the whole, it is a great TV with very good features. Its a good tradeoff between the basic models this year and the higher end versions which made it attractive for me. I did not have to settle for a lower less feature version nor wanted to go for umpteen number of features with a higher version costing above 1000 bucks.
